An emerging biotechnology company developing and combining a family of products and services to revolutionize connective tissue restoration and chronic disease management is seeking a Head of Product Management. The Company is integrating personalized, regenerative therapeutics and bio-scaffolds by leveraging next gen computational processes. The combination of their bio-coatings and 3D printed, personalized tissue-specific treatments should enhance efficacy of regenerative agents, reduce infections and inflammatory reactions from surgical procedures, and accelerate connective tissue restoration. By integrating cutting-edge technology with extensive medical expertise in female pelvic medicine, regenerative medicine, and orthopedic specialties, the firm is poised to pave the way for safer, more efficient, and patient-centric surgical procedures. The company is planning to further develop their platform to address orthopedic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and tendon repair, female urological incontinence, and osteoarthritis treatments, launching a series of key products in late 2024 and 2025.
The Head of Product Management will key define the value inflection path for their projects portfolio from idea to clinical proof of concept and/or licensed device-therapeutics solution, integrating the scientific, clinical, and commercial elements required to develop transformative regenerative tissue engineering based solutions. In these sectors, preclinical or innovation programs often suffer from lack of integration and appreciation of three key elements (scientific/clinical/commercial), leading to design drug-device therapies that are incremental rather than transformative. The company’s aim is not just to avoid these classic mistakes, but to use our knowledge of the clinical and commercial as a strategic advantage that will allow them to bring innovative therapeutics solutions to market as efficiently as possible.
Day to day, this role will work alongside highly accomplished members of their scientific team as well as the company founders to help define the most efficient path to the largest value inflection for the company. The ideal candidate is someone who can elegantly weave together the most critical elements of solution discovery, clinical development, and competitive intelligence to design the most effective path to creating the next major therapeutics solution. To be excellent in this role you must be able to connect the dots between selecting appropriate products to launch, the current clinical and reimbursement environment, the regulatory landscape, and the competitive offerings you will be disrupting. The integration of all these pieces is what makes such bioconvergence-oriented solutions so challenging. Therefore, we are looking for someone excited about solving these problems across a wide variety of therapeutic areas and clinical indications.
Key Duties, Activities and Responsibilities:
In this role, you will be responsible for helping their core scientific team and company founders map out the most efficient path to develop and launch transformative tissue engineered solutions. This will require you to integrate a wide array of topics and responsibilities, including to:
• Deeply understand unmet clinical needs and prevailing solutions being pursued by key competitors and pioneering startups and understand ‘the why’ behind prior attempts and how those paths could be improved upon by reasoning from first principles.
• Work alongside regenerative medicine specialists, bioengineers, AI experts, surgeon scientists, and 3D printing partners to understand the Hypothesized Constraints (outcomes which, today, we believe are not possible but which we have a low understanding of) and Hypothesized Solutions (outcomes which today we believe are possible, but which we have a low understanding of).
• Map out the clinical and commercial landscape by meeting with KOLs, reviewing and developing product road maps, manage day-to-day prototyping and development processes.
• Experience with Reimbursement/Health Insurance practices and dynamics in the medical device payment systems process.
• Define regulatory/clinical path by incorporating recent FDA reviews and clinical trial designs (inclusion/exclusion criteria, endpoint selection).
• Contract with CROs, GLP, GMP and related vendors for delivering products (including AI-based and mesh materials based) and therapeutics through to an IND stage.
• Experience in supporting the establishment and scaling of lab infrastructure in first tier tech capitals (Boston, SF, NYC, Basel) and in emerging tech hubs (San Juan, Bangalore).
Knowledge & Skills
Work Experience, Skills and Education Required:
• Masters in Biotech or equivalent with experience delivering blockbuster products, MD/MBA or MD/PhD, or equivalent.
• Strong scientific background with an understanding of device development and therapeutics solutions.
• Track record of launch experience in drug/device combo products.
• Early-stage company or VC experience is highly desirable.
• A high degree of scientific curiosity and enjoys thinking about the interaction between science and business
• Exceptional conceptual thinking and analytical problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically and identify creative solutions to complex challenges with no historical precedence.
• A proven mindset of proactive continuous improvement; efficient independent worker with the ability to focus and drive for results.
• You have a “get it done” attitude and want to build something that’s highly profitable and innovative. Not only do you have the ability and the desire to architect the high-level strategy, you want to operationalize it and can dive deep into the details.
• Successful in dynamic environments, and working with cross-functional multidisciplinary teams.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Travel requirements:
• 20% min for regular visits to other technology centers / locations/ partners, as appropriate.
Management Core Competencies:
Building Talent
Planning and supporting the development of individuals’ knowledge, skills, and abilities so that they can fulfill current or future job responsibilities more effectively.
Customer Focus
Ensuring that the internal or external customer’s perspective is a driving force behind strategic priorities, business decisions, organizational processes, and individual activities; crafting and implementing service practices that meet customers’ and own organization’s needs; promoting and operationalizing customer service as a value.
Decision Making
Identifying and understanding problems and opportunities by gathering, analyzing, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative information; choosing the best course of action by establishing clear decision criteria, generating and evaluating alternatives, and making timely decisions; taking action that is consistent with available facts and constraints and optimizes probable consequences.
Driving for Results
Setting high goals for personal and group accomplishment; using measurement methods to monitor progress toward goals; tenaciously working to meet or exceed goals while deriving satisfaction from that achievement and continuous improvement.
Driving Innovation
Creating an environment (culture) that inspires people to generate novel solutions with measurable value for existing and potential customers (internal or external); encouraging experimentation with new ways to solve work problems and seize opportunities that result in unique and differentiated solutions.
Emotional Intelligence Essentials
