Research Assistant, Psychology

The Language, Culture, and Identity Lab is housed within the University of Saskatchewan’s Department of Psychology and Health Studies. Research projects carried out are relevant to, and can inform, socio-cultural issues. Dr. Collins, the Principal Investigator, is especially interested in issues of language, culture, and identity.

Primary Purpose: The Language, Culture, and Identity Lab is seeking an individual to manually code over 100 news articles for a specific form a linguistic bias. This is an essential research task that requires a meticulous person with great attention to detail.

Nature of Work: Successful applicants will enjoy a flexible schedule and remote working environment. They will be available to work 15-20 hours/week, though 20 hours/week is preferred. They will report the project lead weekly and on as-needed basis by email and/or Zoom. Otherwise, work will be carried out independently.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities: In your appointment of Research Assistant… you will be responsible for reading and quantitatively coding news articles. This will involve selecting relevant text, and determining the valence of the excerpts and the level of abstraction. The Research Assistant will be required to populate and maintain a spreadsheet with coding results as well as any notes with updates, questions, or concerns. It is expected that coding one article will take approximately ~30 minutes.

Education: Social Sciences Undergraduate Student, preferably in the third or fourth year of their degree.

Licenses: TCPS2 CORE Certificate is an asset.

Experience: Exposure to social science research through undergraduate research courses is an asset.
