ABOUT US

The International League Against Arbitrary Detention (ILAAD) is an NGO composed of lawyers, researchers and human rights activists defending arbitrary detention cases at the United Nations and advocating to free those wrongfully detained. ILAAD’s fight against arbitrary detention is conducted globally, by volunteers in France and abroad, in the name of promoting and protecting the rights and freedoms guaranteed by international human rights law.

MISSIONS

Our Research & Advocacy Officers are tasked with monitoring and analyzing wrongful detention practices to assist our team of pro bono lawyers and researchers to provide timely and accurate legal and advocacy support on arbitrary detention issues. They are also tasked with participating in the development of partnerships with local NGOs working in the space of arbitrary detention to build concerted advocacy strategies to defend the rights of arbitrary detention victims in different regions of the world. As such, they take part in ILAAD’s campaign to advance human rights’ promotion and put pressure on governments to free victims of arbitrary detention by drafting publications on arbitrary detention cases and practices, as well as advocacy materials.

POSITIONS

Positions are remote and our Research & Advocacy Officers are expected to volunteer between 5 to 10 hours per week. Five (5) positions are currently available.

REQUIREMENTS

While to become a member of ILAAD, all you need is an interest in human rights, a willingness to help put an end to arbitrary detention and to pay a membership fee to contribute to ILAAD’s mission, we expect the candidate to a Research & Advocacy Officer position to have :
• specific knowledge of international relations or international law and a proven interest in undertaking research on human rights;
• ability to draft research materials in a variety of formats, e.g. substantial reports, synthesis of legal decisions, media and communication materials;
• ability to understand and express ideas in English and Spanish in a clear and concise way, both orally and in writing. Knowledge of at least one of the other official languages of the United Nations is a plus (Arabic, Chinese, French or Russian).
