Overview :

We are seeking a technical writer and editor to support Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) through technical writing and editing that will help ensure its scientific and technical communications products clearly and accurately present the research and scientific developments of its staff and programs to peers and sponsors.

This position will report to the Technical Communications manager and assist customers across the lab. This position resides in Technical Communications in the Communications and Community Engagement Directorate at ORNL.

The successful candidate must edit and revise complex written material without loss of technical accuracy and with meticulous attention to logic, consistency, audience appropriateness, and applicable style guidelines.

Major Duties / Responsibilities :
• Edit, revise, and rewrite, when necessary, various types of reports, proposals, journal articles, procedures, book chapters, conference papers, and visual materials for research staff to enhance clarity, coherence, and organization while ensuring compliance with established rules of grammar and syntax without loss of technical meaning and with meticulous attention to logic, consistency, and accuracy.
• Edit and revise the manuscripts of nonnative speakers. Enhance the accuracy and readability of these documents to ensure a high rate of acceptance in open-literature publications.
• Understand complex science and technology related research and programs and revise or rewrite procedures, summaries, overviews, plans, nominations, letters, and other documents based on research and technical data and results in collaboration with researchers and scientists.
• Work with scientists, managers, and other staff to produce interesting and compelling materials that readily convey the importance of the work to multiple audiences, including scientifically trained researchers and sponsors, scientific peers, executive leadership, and industry partners.
• Understand and apply ORNL publications standards and styles or external (e.g., journal, sponsor) guidelines.
• Suggest visual materials in support of scientific and promotional information needs and collaborate with graphic artists to develop effective products.
• Advise customers on usage, style, format, methods, and document preparation and production.
• Provide project management and guidance to ensure publications meet ORNL’s or outside publisher’s requirements and are effectively managed through their completion or delivery to the publisher.
• Establish, in consultation with customers, priorities and schedules for meeting deadlines. Schedule and coordinate complex projects.

Monitor and stay within assigned budgets for these activities.
• Mentor customers to help them improve their writing skills and enhance the products they produce. Prepare and deliver presentations and tutorials for the technical staff upon request.
• Oversee and coordinate efforts of teams assigned on larger projects, working with electronic publishers, graphic artists, and reproduction staff to ensure professional quality and adherence to budgets and schedules.
• Help mentor and train junior group members.
• Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

Basic Qualifications :
• BS / BA degree, preferably in English or related field or a STEM field.
• At least 5 years of experience in technical or scientific editing and writing or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications :
• MS degree in English, technical writing, or a science plus experience editing the work of researchers in scientific and technical fields for style, tone, consistency, and grammatical correctness.
• Excellent command of standard American English style and usage, as demonstrated by writing and editing samples.
• Proven scientific / technical reading, writing, and editing skills and working knowledge of standard style guides (e.g.

Chicago Manual of Style ) and standard scientific / technical style guides (e.g., ACS Style Guide , IEEE Editorial Style Manual ).

Excellent attention to detail; ability to understand, follow, and implement complex instructions; strong organizational skills, including the ability to simultaneously handle multiple assignments;

and excellent verbal communication skills.

Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines; strong interpersonal skills; ability to work both independently and with all levels of executive leadership, researchers, and staff in a team-based environment;

and strong skills in solving problems and developing and implementing solutions.
• Ability to easily grasp scientific and technical concepts and clearly communicate them to a scientifically trained audience such as researchers and sponsors.
• Firm grasp of standard business computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office applications, especially Word; Adobe Acrobat).
