The YesWeCode program is an initiative of Hakili Community for Sustainable Development. We are dedicated to providing accessible, convenient, inclusive and socially responsible coding and robotic programs to marginalized youth in Calgary. Founded in 2016, Hakili is a non-profit organization that works within our communities to tackle the complex problem of intergenerational poverty in Canada and around the world.
We are looking for Volunteer Coding Tutors to lead and support weekly Virtual Coding sessions from the November 18 until the end of May. As a Volunteer Coding Tutor, you will lead and support the coding lessons to groups of 6 students max, with beginner to intermediate levels of experience (ages 7-14). Sessions are held weekly on Zoom and each session is 2 hours. As a volunteer tutor, you will have the option to lead or support a minimum of 1 session, up to 9. The curriculum will be provided and is broken down into 5 blocks: block coding, HTML, CSS, Python & Java and a… Digital Project. Training on the curriculum will be provided in mid-October (dates TBA).

We are looking for dedicated and passionate volunteers who are:

Day-to-day responsibilities:
• Conduct coding classes for up to 6 students virtually.
• Create and maintain an atmosphere of friendly teamwork among the students.
• Monitor the quality of the educational process.
• Support the children and their parents, provide educational feedback.
• Resolve and prevent conflicts with parents and children based on company standards.
• Adequately prepare for each program by reading curriculum and watching training videos.
Qualifications:
• Graduated from or current students enrolled in a computer science or STEM-related field (such as engineering, math or data science) is preferred.
• Strong knowledge and experience with coding and technology is required.
• Proficiency in one (preferably all) of the following languages: block coding, CSS, HTML, Java and Python.
• Past experience working with children is preferred (ie. Tutoring, coaching, camp counselling, volunteering events).
• Police background check and vulnerable sector check prior to applying is preferred, but can be done upon acceptance of application.
