Tech Lead, Database Sources

Airbyte is the open-source standard for EL(T). We enable data teams to replicate data from applications, APIs, and databases to data warehouses, lakes, and other destinations. We believe only an open-source approach can solve the problem of data integration, as it enables us to cover the long tail of integrations while enabling teams to adapt pre-built connectors to their needs.

So far, we’ve… built over 350 connectors and have had 35,000+ companies replicating data with us. We’ve raised $181M from some of the world’s top investors (Benchmark, Accel, Altimeter, Coatue, Y Combinator, etc.) and believe in product-led growth, where we build something awesome and let our product bring the users, rather than an outbound sales engine with cold calls.

Airbyte is remote friendly, with most of the team still based in Silicon Valley. We’re fully transparent as a company. Our company handbook, core values, methodology, strategy and roadmap are open to all.

If you find this role exciting, we encourage you to apply even if you think you don’t meet all requirements.

Opportunity

Airbyte is taking a big swing to make data available and actionable to everyone, everywhere. Our product manages the extract and load of data, so that developers and data practitioners can focus on building products, not moving data. As a Tech Lead at Airbyte, you’ll be part of the team that solves all the data movement challenges that a developer has ever faced, for the last time.

You’ll be solving product and technical challenges that you have never seen before but will draw on your past expertise in building products and leading teams that move and use data at scale. The engineers on Airbyte’s Database Sources Team are the experts for extracting data out of relational and object databases like Postgres, Oracle, and MongoDB as fast and reliability as possible. You understand cursors, CDC replication, and tools like Debezium. We are working to build easy-to-use abstractions for how to create a general-case approach that works for all databases, culminating in the creation of a connector development kit and framework that anyone can use, for any database. Moving operational data into data warehouses is the foundation of any ELT pipeline, and we have to get it right.

As Tech Lead, you’ll be ultimately responsible for the day-to-day execution and delivery of the team’s projects, and a key voice in the long-term roadmap that the team undertakes. This is a player-coach role where you will be splitting your time 50/50 between code and managing the teams deliverables and stakeholders. You’ll be partnering with the Director of Sync Foundations to mentor and scale the team as needed, as well as identifying ways to improve delivery, speed, stability, and developer experience.

This role can be an entrypoint into our manager track.

What You’ll Do
• Imbue the team with development best practices, good testing hygiene, and healthy scrum-like practices.
• Maintain the team’s backlog, keep projects on track, and define the right interfaces for handling interrupts from support, sales, and high-value customers.
• Help shape the long-term roadmap for the team. Work with product managers, stakeholders, vendors, and partners to decide what to build next and why.
• Pioneer a new framework for extracting from and loading data into databases and data warehouses.
• Drive step function improvements in performance & reliability at scale.
• Build leverage: a week-long task this year should take ten minutes next year
• Write high-leverage code, and teach others to do the same.

What You’ll Need
• 6+ years of software engineering experience.
• 2+ years of technical team leadership experience as either a Team Lead, Tech Lead, Program Manager, Engineering Manager, or similar role in which you had direct responsibility for a team or program, not necessarily the people on that team.
• Deep knowledge of the “E” of the ELT
• Familiarity with CDC replication strategies for at least one popular database (e.g. Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB, etc)
• 2+ years of Java/Kotlin experience preferred
• Experience profiling and optimizing high-performance applications
• You have an insatiable desire to ship.
• You take a user-centric approach to building products and developer tools
• You enjoy building leverage through abstractions and tooling that multiply output
• Ability to influence without relying solely on authority and work with engineers junior and senior
• A passion for continuous learning and improvement (both at a personal and team level)
• Excellent written & verbal communication skills
• Belief in our values
