Job Title: Accounting Manager – R&D

Location: New York City – Remote (occasional in-office meetings required)

Salary: compensation targeting $120-140k – max $150K + bonus

Position Overview

The Accounting Manager – R&D will support the financial management of a multi-year Research & Development portfolio. This role is highly hands-on and will focus on tracking project-based financial commitments, supporting expense management, and ensuring accurate accounting and reporting of R&D spend.

This is an ideal opportunity for an accounting professional with experience in biotech, pharmaceutical, clinical research, or grant-funded environments who enjoys working cross-functionally with R&D, Finance, and HR teams.

Key Responsibilities

R&D Financial Management & Project Support
• Track financial commitments, payment milestones, and expenses across R&D and clinical projects
• Support vendor selection, contract review, and financial screening processes
• Partner with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment on project budgets and spend

Accounting & Close Activities
• Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
• Review invoices for accuracy, proper documentation, and correct general ledger coding
• Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and support audit readiness
• Generate routine and ad-hoc financial reports related to R&D spend

Grant & Expense Management
• Support grant funding processes, reporting, and compliance requirements
• Monitor and reconcile project expenses to ensure accuracy and alignment with funding

Cash Management & Operations
• Manage banking activities including wire transfers and approvals
• Prepare bank and investment reconciliations
• Support payroll processing, allocations, and related reconciliations
• Assist with retirement plan funding, compliance testing, and filings

Compliance & Process Improvement
• Ensure adherence to internal policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
• Maintain documentation related to financial commitments and accounting processes
• Identify opportunities to improve systems, workflows, and reporting efficiency

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• 5–10 years of accounting experience, with strong hands-on exposure to full-cycle accounting
• Experience within biotech, pharmaceutical, clinical research, or grant-funded environments strongly preferred
• Knowledge of R&D or clinical trial accounting, including accruals and vendor/CRO management
• Experience with ERP systems; NetSuite preferred
• Strong Excel and financial systems proficiency
• Detail-oriented with strong analytical and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating across teams
