National Services is a directorate within HMCTS Operations, comprised of Criminal Fines, Collection and Enforcement, National Business Centres and Courts & Tribunals Service Centres.

As a directorate, were a little different than our counterparts who are aligned by their geographic location National Services Supports services and service users over multiple jurisdictions and regions. Location

The post holder can be based in any National Services office across England and Wales. We offer a flexible working system in many of our offices and frequent travel to other HMCTS sites will be required as part of the working arrangements. In line with the departments policies, travel, and subsistence and, where appropriate, overnight accommodation will be available.

Your role

The Business Analyst will play a key role in helping deliver automation and service improvements as part of the Digital Automation Programme. Youll work closely with Project and Change teams to spot opportunities to improve how services work across National Services and Courts & Tribunals.

A big part of the role is looking at performance data, user demand and trends to understand whats causing problems or delays. This will often focus on high‑volume areas like emails, common queries and differences in how processes are followed.

Working alongside the Digital and Technology Services (DTS) Low Code team, youll help shape and develop automation solutions such as Power Automate Flows, Power Apps, Robotic Process Automation and webforms. Youll turn whats happening on the ground into clear, practical requirements, helping to make sure solutions focus on the biggest pain points, cut down manual work and improve the experience for users.

Youll spend time talking to operational teams to understand their challenges, gather feedback and support testing and rollout of new solutions. Youll also help track how changes are performing once theyre live and provide insight to support decisions.

Were looking for someone with strong analytical skills, a good eye for detail and confidence working with different data sources. Youll also need to be comfortable working with a range of people, including operational, digital and project teams, and be able to explain your findings clearly.

Your skills and experience

Root-cause analysis experience to be able to identify the key areas affecting National Services performance in different aspects of service delivery.

Knowledge of business processes and performance standards, or willingness to learn to be able to make accurate and effective judgments on where service delivery is under (or over) achieving against expected outcomes.

Business analysis experience to be able to extract, collate and examine data and insights effectively to understand what could be driving performance issues or to identify potential improvements from proposed changes.

Ways of working

Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week. There is an expectation that you can be flexible with your working hours to accommodate the needs of the business.

HMCTS welcomes part-time, flexible, and job-sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs and are agreed prior to appointment. All applications for part-time, flexible, and job-sharing working patterns will be considered in accordance with the MoJs Flexible Working policy.

Due to the nature of the role the minimum hours would be 30 hours per week over 4 or 5 days.

Non-contractual hybrid working is currently available; arrangements are determined by the business. We may not be able to facilitate requests for a particular work from home/working in the office schedule.

For this post, occasional travel to other National Services sites may be required.

Fixed Term Appointments (MoJ Staff)

Before applying, employees must seek approval from their line managers to ensure they can be released for the duration of the FTA and can return to their substantive role at the end. If there is no role available at the end of the FTA, the employee will be subject to redeployment and potentially redundancy procedures.

Loans/Detached Duty

The terms of the loan or detached duty will be agreed between the home and host department and the Civil Servant (candidate). This includes grade on return. Prior agreement to be released on a loan or detached duty basis should be obtained before commencing the application process.

Skilled Worker Visa

From 22 July 2025, the Government increased the salary threshold and skills level for Skilled Worker visas. This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for sponsorship in accordance with the current immigration rules if you looking to apply for a Skilled Worker Visa for the first time.

The Department cannot consider sponsoring you for this role unless you have held a Skilled Worker visa continuously since before 22 July 2025. If you have held a Skilled Worker visa continuously, please raise this during your vetting checks and eligibility will be assessed in accordance with the immigration rules and transitional provisions in place.
