Criminal Justice Hub has launched its beta. We need an experienced WordPress developer to help improve our service, review themes and plugins, build new tools and support a public interest justice project.

The website is central to our work. It is where we publish accessible information, organise public data, develop practical tools and help people better understand the criminal justice system. Strong development support will help us improve the beta, fix issues, build new features and make the site easier to use.
You will help us turn ideas from researchers, content volunteers and the wider team into well built digital services. Your work could improve how people find information, use tools, access guides, understand prison and court information, or navigate complex justice processes.
A capable WordPress developer will also help us avoid technical mistakes at an early stage. Your input will improve code quality, accessibility, performance, maintainability and the long term sustainability of the project.
This role will make a practical difference by helping us build a website that is clearer, more accessible and more useful for members of the public, people affected by the justice system, students, volunteers, practitioners and organisations working in criminal justice.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for a very experienced WordPress developer who is competent, reliable and confident working across themes, plugins and technical problem solving.
You should have at least three years professional experience in WordPress development, and ideally more. We are looking for someone who can work independently, review existing code, suggest sensible improvements and turn ideas into practical solutions.
The ideal volunteer will have experience of
• custom WordPress theme development;
• WordPress plugin development and review;
• PHP, HTML, CSS and JavaScript;
• WordPress hooks, templates, custom post types and taxonomies;
• accessibility and responsive design;
• GitHub or similar version control workflows;
• performance, security and maintainability;
• working with designers, researchers, content editors or non-technical colleagues.
Experience with public sector, charity, legal, justice, advice or accessibility focused websites would be helpful, but is not essential.
We are looking for someone enthusiastic, supportive and practical. You should be comfortable joining a volunteer led project, helping others understand technical options and taking ideas from discussion through to working code.
You do not need to be available all the time, but we do need someone dependable who can provide a capable pair of hands when development input is needed.

What will you be doing?
Criminal Justice Hub is a public interest digital project making information about the criminal justice system in England and Wales easier to find, understand and use.
We have recently launched our beta service and are now looking to improve the platform, build new tools, strengthen our design system and develop better ways of presenting complex criminal justice information online.
We are seeking a very experienced WordPress developer to support the technical side of the project. This role would suit someone who is confident reviewing and building WordPress themes and plugins, understands good development practice, and can turn ideas into working code.
Key tasks may include
• reviewing and improving our WordPress theme;
• building or improving WordPress plugins;
• helping develop new tools and interactive features;
• improving templates, content types and structured content;
• supporting accessibility and responsive design improvements;
• working with the wider team to turn user needs and ideas into practical technical solutions;
• helping maintain a consistent design system across the website;
• reviewing code and advising on technical quality;
• helping us make good decisions about performance, security and maintainability.
This is not expected to require constant input every week. There may be quieter periods where less development support is needed, but there will usually be something useful to improve, review or build.
This is an unpaid, UK based volunteer role. The volunteer will not be required to line manage paid employees. We are looking for someone with at least three years professional experience in WordPress development, ideally with substantial experience of custom themes, plugins and technical review.
