[Hiring] Head of US Tax @Auction Technology Group

Role Description

The Head of US Tax is responsible for managing all US direct tax matters day to day, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations while supporting the business and Group Tax Director on tax planning, risk management, and strategic initiatives. The role will lead tax compliance and reporting activities for ATGs US businesses, oversee external advisors, support audits and tax authority enquiries, and provide guidance on the tax implications of business transactions and operational changes.

We’re looking for someone who is based in either the UK or in the US.

Key Responsibilities

Tax compliance and reporting


Lead the (currently outsourced) preparation, review, and filing of US federal, state, and local income tax returns and determine appropriate delivery model going forward.


Oversee property tax, franchise tax, and other applicable US tax and corporate filings (including annual returns) to the extent not covered under existing outsourced arrangements, ensuring robust processes in place.


Maintain a tax calendar, ensuring that all compliance and reporting obligations are clear, that there are appropriate processes in place to manage and that deadlines are met (including payments).


Work with wider finance team and Treasury to ensure expected tax payments are included in appropriate cash flow forecasting to support effective cash flow planning.


Coordinate with external tax advisors and service providers as required.


Support Group Tax Director with half year and annual tax reporting requirements for the US, including deferred tax calculations and uncertain tax positions.


Collaborate closely with finance and accounting teams to ensure that tax is appropriately recorded and that data flows between teams are clear and timely.


Partner with HR and payroll teams to provide day to day tax support for US related payroll issues.

Tax planning, advisory and risk management


Lead responses to federal, state, and local tax audits and enquiries, as required.


Manage all communication with state and federal agencies, ensuring notices are responded to timely and risk register maintained.


Monitor changes in US tax legislation and assess business impacts.


Identify opportunities for tax efficiencies while maintaining compliance and managing risk.


Partner effectively across teams to ensure tax incentives, such as US R&D credits, are maximized.


Support Group Tax Director and other stakeholders with project work and business initiatives, providing practical tax advice to business stakeholders.


Identify and mitigate tax risks, ensuring appropriate policies, procedures and internal controls are in place.

Qualifications


Degree educated and/or CTA, ACA or equivalent.


Significant US tax experience, ideally in a UK inbound context, including US corporate income tax compliance and reporting.


Strong knowledge of US federal and multi-state taxation.


Experience working within a multinational organization with exposure to international tax considerations impacting US operations.


Comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment with the ability to manage multiple priorities.


Strong communicator who can translate complex tax issues into clear business recommendations for non-tax stakeholders.


Strong project management and organizational skills.


A proactive, collaborative approach with the confidence to work independently.


Familiarity with ERP systems such as Sage, Netsuite and Onestream (or similar) and an interest in tax technology and automation initiatives.

Understands the US tax landscape, complexity and administration involved.


Strong technical knowledge of US corporate taxes and proven experience of managing outsourced tax activities.


Strong experience of US tax reporting.


Can partner effectively across teams and functions.


Can liaise effectively with tax jurisdictions.


Is comfortable being in the detail but can also join the dots and add value.


Understands the broader picture and the wider impact of the US sub-group on the Group’s tax position.
