Junior Graphic Designer (Print & Layout Specialist)

Junior Graphic Designer (Print & Layout Specialist)

Job Summary

Storyshares is seeking a part-time Graphic Designer & Typesetter to dedicate 10-25 hours per week (project-dependent) to apply their eye for typographic balance to pages made especially for struggling readers. Focusing primarily on multi-page documents and print production, you will turn creative concepts into press-ready files. This role requires advanced Adobe InDesign expertise to ensure efficiency, consistency, and brand compliance.

The ideal candidate will showcase attention to detail, creativity, adaptability, initiative, adherence to deadlines, and passion for the cause. Candidates should come ready to read the stories they’ll be working with, which amplify underrepresented voices and range from realism to fantasy to historical fiction and more. The Graphic Designer is the last link in making texts accessible, will always favor legibility but avoid infantilization, and shape each book’s identity within Storyshares’s style.

Key Responsibilities

• Document Architecture: Set up complex, multi-page layouts utilizing master pages, comprehensive paragraph/character styles and object styles to maintain perfect typographical and visual hierarchy across all documents.

• Prepress Production: Prepare accurate, print-ready files including proper bleeds, margins, and preflight checks to prevent printing errors.

• Color Management: Ensure accurate reproduction by utilizing specific color profiles (CMYK vs. RGB) and resolving output issues prior to vendor handoff.

• Brand Consistency: Implement and enforce brand guidelines across all internal and client-facing materials.

• Collaboration: Work closely with senior designers, copywriters, and project managers to incorporate edits and meet tight deadlines.

• Image Sourcing: Experience researching, vetting, and acquiring high-quality imagery from stock libraries.

Qualifications

• Experience: 1–3 years of professional graphic design or production layout experience.

• Software Skills: Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, with a specific focus on InDesign (master pages, styles). Working knowledge of Illustrator and Photoshop.

• Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of print production processes, color models, and prepress file setup.

• Organization: Strong file management, version control, and organizational skills.

• Portfolio: Must submit an online portfolio showcasing examples of multi-page layouts and typography execution.
