ASAP The Role
We are looking for an experienced Consultant Software Developer to support a major digital modernisation and migration programme within a UK government organisation.
You will work within a cross-functional delivery team to analyse existing production services, identify technical dependencies and support the safe migration of legacy applications to modern, domain-aligned microservices.
This role requires strong Java and Spring Boot development experience, alongside the ability to contribute to technical analysis, solution design, migration planning and live service transition activities.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, build and maintain scalable and resilient services using Java and Spring Boot.
• Analyse existing production systems, technical dependencies and service integrations.
• Support the decomposition of monolithic and legacy services into domain-aligned microservices.
• Assess the technical and operational impact of proposed migrations.
• Identify migration risks and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.
• Design and develop RESTful APIs while maintaining backward compatibility during platform transitions.
• Translate business capabilities and requirements into practical technical solutions.
• Conduct data analysis, data model investigations and field mapping.
• Develop migration frameworks, validation tools and automated testing approaches.
• Contribute to technical design workshops, architecture discussions and migration planning.
• Support deployment validation, service assurance and operational readiness activities.
• Work closely with Product Owners, architects, business analysts and other stakeholders.
• Clearly communicate technical findings, risks and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
Essential Experience
• Previous experience working within a UK government agency.
• Strong commercial Java development experience.
• Extensive experience using Spring Boot.
• Experience delivering complex migration and modernisation programmes.
• Experience decomposing monolithic or legacy applications into microservices.
• Proven ability to analyse production systems and identify technical dependencies.
• Strong experience designing and developing RESTful APIs.
• Experience maintaining API compatibility during system or platform migrations.
• Ability to perform business capability analysis and translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Experience conducting data analysis, data model investigations and field mapping.
• Experience developing migration frameworks, validation tools and migration testing approaches.
• Strong understanding of Test Driven Development and automated testing.
• Experience using JUnit and Mockito.
• Experience working with relational databases, ideally MySQL.
• Experience managing database schema changes using Liquibase or a similar tool.
• Experience using Docker and working with cloud-native development practices.
• Experience working within AWS environments and cloud-based architectures.
• Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
• Experience using GitLab, Maven and automated deployment processes.
• Experience contributing to technical design and architecture discussions.
• Strong understanding of Agile delivery methodologies.
• Experience working within cross-functional delivery teams.
• Experience using API documentation and testing tools such as Swagger and Postman.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
Additional Information The successful consultant will be required to complete BPSS clearance before starting the assignment.
